It’s Not The Heat, It’s The Humidity

“It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” How many times have you heard that lately? Usually, I’d agree. But this week in New Jersey is just plain HOT. Heat, humidity, whatever. HOT!

Can I bake a cake in my car? Fry an egg on the hood? Possibly, but I’m too hot to bother experimenting.

We are blessed with a pool. Ok. It came with the house. I certainly wouldn’t have put it there myself. It looks like a UFO dropped a big soup bowl right smack in the middle of our back yard. It sure doesn’t make for good landscaping. But this week? I’m grateful. It’s a welcome escape from the heat. It provides a way to enjoy being outside rather than trapped indoors.

It’s much more difficult to tolerate temperature changes as we get older. When I was young my mother would often complain about this. I’d think, what’s the big deal? OK, Mom. I get it now. I can still hear her voice as she entered the house on a sweltering day. “It’s hotter than hell out there today.” Um. OK. I don’t want to experience that to compare, but I get it.

Extremes in weather, extremes in life. You have to take the bad with the good. Sometimes the bad makes you appreciate the good even more.

When my kids were young and they griped about something they couldn’t have and how terrible their life was, I’d say, “The day may come when you’ll wish you had it as bad as you think you have it right now.”  They really didn’t understand, but somehow I felt better to say it.

Remain thankful. In the meantime, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Literally.

The next time it’s 85 degrees out, it just may feel like a cool day!

  1. Thank you for the levity. I would laugh long and hard but would probably break out in a sweat doing so.

  2. Clearly the weather is getting to all of us–I wrote about it for my blog, too, although you won’t see it until next week since I’m celebrating this week!

  3. Hi Carolyn,
I just had a chance to read this. I can certainly relate and glad the 100+ heatwave didn’t last more than a few days (I think). Long enough for us to have an AC leak or two in our attic though. :(
And yes, outdoor pools are a nice way to cool off in such times, but I’m also glad I’m not having to sweat and worry trying to keep one clean and running any more. :)
Hope you have a “cool” and enjoyable rest of summer!
    < Neil
