Leaning Toward the Light

As I exited the church recently I noticed the marigolds in this bed were all leaning in one direction. Every one of them was pointed toward the sun.

Do you remember learning about photosynthesis in school? Plants require light in order to process and produce the energy they need. In high school I conducted an experiment for science class, growing plants under different conditions. Those without light didn’t grow at all. The plants in dimly lit conditions didn’t fare too well. The ones grown near a window leaned toward the light.

Plants instinctively know what they need and they reach for it. They get what is necessary to thrive.  How about us? Are we reaching for what we need?

We may get what we need nutritionally from food and drink. Our physical needs may also be attended to through exercise. Our emotions from relationships. But what about our spiritual side? Are we putting as much importance on that as the others?

I love this song; it expresses what is in my heart today:

I  need God. I can’t imagine a day going by without praying, being thankful, and depending on Him, the one who created me and knows me better than any other.

Like the marigolds, I am leaning toward the light. I hope you are too.
