Thankfulness and Fear

Today I feel thankful. Nothing unusual about that, as it’s Thanksgiving, leading most of us to reflect on our blessings.

But this year is different than any we have lived through. 2020 has been nothing short of bizarre.  With the pandemic of the coronavirus ever lurking around and the fear and uncertainty that surrounds it, it may be difficult to find that gratitude right now.

Sure, I’ve let fear take over many times this year. Exposures at work led to counting the days after and hoping I remained healthy. Exposures for my daughter at college led to counting the days of quarantine along with her, with the hope that she remains healthy.

Given that my mother passed away from covid-19 pneumonia, (see my previous post, The New Normal?) it led me to a bit of paranoia. I don’t beat myself up about that. It causes me to be extremely cautious and even more grateful for my health and that of my family. It is ever so evident that life can change in an instant.

So fear can be a good thing, if it’s taken as a call to action.

Thankfulness is even better. It stirs us to slow down and pay attention to all that is good around us.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends! May you let a little fear be your guide to staying safe, and may your blessings cheer your heart  and bring you joy.
